Rally Wheel Codes - '70 Trans Am

I'm in the final stage of a complete restoration of my 1970 Trans Am (Blue, Blue, 4 speed) and have a question regarding rally wheel codes. I know my car originally came with JW code Rally II wheels and have three of them. I have been looking for another two JW wheels but have had no luck. I have read that KR and KN codes are the same wheel as JW wheels. Is that correct? I would consider another wheel code if the wheel itself is identical.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Hi,

The wheels you are talking about are special wheels. They are typical 15" Pontiac Rally 2's, BUT they have a 14" center. SO the band of steel between the rim and the center is bigger. The typical wheel for 1970 Trans AM is the JW wheel. The 1970 GTO ALSO got this special 1 year only wheel and they were typically KR wheels. They are the same except for the code. Hope this helps you. 70 T/A's are the best!

Hi.

1970 was a special year for Pontiac, especially the Trans Am. There were SO many 1 off items, one of them was the Rally II wheel. They were always available in 15" and 14" sizes. But in 1970 Pontiac made a special 15" Rally II wheel with a 14" center. They labeled them with 2 different codes (I am not aware of a third, but perhaps there is), JW and KR. The JW seemed to be destined for the Trans Am while the KR seemed to be put on GTO's. As far as I know, these two rims are the same.

Hope that helps you,

JW and KR (and I believe KN) 15X7's are visually identical except for the codes.

JW was standard on 70 T/A and available on the 70 Formula only when it received the Ram Air motor. 70 GTOs got KR. In 71 and 72 KRs were used on TA as well as GTO. The number directly below the M is the last number in the year the wheel was manufactured (by the valve stem). The numbers on each side of the valve stem are the month (left) and day (right). While literature for the 71 TA said Honeycombs were standard, it appears shortages of those wheels led them to offer the Rally II as well.

JW, KN, and KR were the same, except for the two letter codes and the date codes. Techrev makes the best new replicas, and they can be stamped with JW and 1970 date codes if needed. I ordered a set for my 1970 Trans Am, because the JW wheels are too hard to find and too expensive.

I could be wrong but from what I see on their website they are NOT REPRODUCTIONS but rather they are VISUAL REPLICAS, built using USED OEM 14" centers welded into used 15" rims. You'll still need to sandblast, fill in incorrect stamping on the rims, stamp your desired marking if desired, and then paint. Finding correct factory appearing stamps for sale is not likely IMO. Just wouldn't want someone to see your post and jump on their site ordering wheels thinking they were buying reproduction wheels painted in original type finishes. Their advertising is very carefully worded and should be read slowly to be sure folks know they're buying used parts welded together that are a project that requires finishing.

These quotes are copied & pasted from their website.

"Rally II wheels are now available refinished to better than O.E.M. specifications."

"This picture is there to show you what the wheels will actually look like with accessories/correct paint on your car. "

"This wheel is a COSMETIC & DIMENSIONAL COPY of the ORIGINAL "

"Our wheels are made with ORIGINAL GM PARTS"

"Wheel nut tapers are within spec."

"Media blasting, final prep & paint are left for your attention to detail"

Thanks! The one I got were already stamped with FAK and I plan to leave them that way as to not try to fool anyone. I believe that the welds on the back are beefier than stock wheels as well.
