thanks guys.

Really happy with the car. Been wickedly cold here the last week so have done nothing on car. I need to find my 3m mask and get correct filters before putting on the epoxy underside of hood. I will get going on por 15 inside the car this week as its warming up.

Do you guys think its worth laying on epoxy over the por15 inside the car like on the floor? I have a full gallon of epoxy.

Nice Rick what are the plans for the motor?

My goal is bearings and rings. The carb shafts are seized so I will rebuild it but would like throttle body injection. I guess we will see what the internals look like. At least I have something to do when I get sick of sanding.

Engine turns freely and except for the carb everything looks workable.

Its a YS block

G252 Putting it manufactured July 25th 1972

C007278 Built in California

Have not found the other numbers yet. Guy said it came from a 1973 so looks like he was spot on.

Oh forgot to get the pics of the trailing arms I bought. Guy said they came from 68 bird and are made by Moroso. I gave him $ 20.00 for them. Never seen what the real ones look like so I have no idea if they will work but the steel is worth $ 20.00 so I am ok either way.

A '73 YS would have come with 4x heads. And '73 was the 1st year of the hot air choke, which I see your carb has. So, the carb could be original.

There were 3 different casting number Q-jet intakes used on '73 400's. All 3 had the big ugly EGR valve sticking out the passenger side, just below the carb. And they had a big sump underneath, requiring a special valley cover, with a deep groove.

Don't reckin I know what a '68 Bird trailing arm is. All the '68's I owned had multi-leaf springs, and staggered shocks. No arms attached. :no

Thanks very much pony.

I was just reading your thread on intakes.

Here is my plan with the engine, keeping in mind that I want things to be as simple as possible, let me know where the flaws are.

First off, the stock 400 will have plenty of power for me. This is just going to be a driver. My priorities are to have this car very reliable. That is why I was thinking of throttle body FI.

Looks like there is a lot of crap on this intake that I would like to simplify. What is the best way to do that?

I want to run an MSD ignition and ready to run distributor. Am I on the right track? What do I need to do to this intake to make that all happen?

"...Looks like there is a lot of crap on this intake that I would like to simplify. What is the best way to do that?..."

Best way is to just replace it. Cheapest alum is a used Performer. Or you can go with a '72 iron intake. It will work with the 4x heads. You can sometimes find these on Ebay and the PY Pontiac forum.

I recommend a good rebuilt Q-jet. I know nothing about FI, and don't wanna learn.

"...I want to run an MSD ignition and ready to run distributor..."

I recommend a GOOD HEI, like the DUI brand. They are self contained, meaning they do not require an external coil. Only need one 12v hot wire, and a tach wire.

Thanks Don. I know I have to do some more number decoding off other parts but whatever you can tell me about what you see in my pics I would greatly appreciate. They are frame connectors, my mistake with the terminology.

Are there hood clearance issues with Performer?

Are you saying these are 4X heads I have ?

I should have said I have an MSD ignition box already, and coil, so would just need the Distributor.

I am fine with a carb but would invest in throttle body injection, as I did my boat, not really wanting to knock myself out on a carb. The carb on this engine is pretty rough. Everything is seized! I was surprised how cheap the steel, duel line, gas tanks are.

Of course all this is depends on what I find inside. For all I know right now, it could be a pile of junk!

You can run an MSD ignition with an HEI. Works quite well.

"...Are you saying these are 4X heads I have ?..."

I can't see the head numbers, in the pics. The numbers will be cast over the center exhaust ports. 4X heads were used in '73-'74, & 5C in early '75. #96 heads were used in '71, & 7K3 in '72.

"...Would these heads have the hardened seats?..."

Yes. :yes But it is said that the hardening process was improved after the 4X heads, and that the 6X heads had a better quality hardening process. I've read that because of this, some 4X heads seemed to crack between seats, more than the later 6X heads. But, there are still lots of 4X heads in service.

"...Are there hood clearance issues with Performer?..."

No. :no The Performer has about the same clearance as a stock cast iron intake. But, it's a different story with the Performer RPM. The RPM is quite a bit taller. Sometimes they can be used with the correct recessed base air cleaner. Most hood clearance issues are with the 2nd gen Birds, especially TA's. The 1st gens seem to have a little more room, above the engine.

"...I should have said I have an MSD ignition box already, and coil, so would just need the Distributor..."

I am not a fan of the MSD box, and external coil. We had a box go bad on a dirt tracker, and cost me the price of a new box. And, the self contained HEI is just so much more convenient. And it creates a less cluttered look. You don't have all the extra wires, nor the box and visible coil. If you like MSD products, you can use an MSD cap, rotor, coil, module, wires, etc, on a self contained HEI. But, it's your car. So, if you want a box and external coil, so be it. :smile22:

Just curious--what will a complete FI set-up cost ?

Not sure, but a throttle body FI set-up might work better with a single plane intake. If you need the exhaust heat crossover, for cold weather driving, a Torker 2 intake will work. Or, if you don't need it, one of the cheap Chinese single planes will work.

A GOOD Q-jet is less than $500.
