On my 99 V6 automatic, at lower speeds and around-town driving, it won't downshift unless I floor it, and it seems to lack power. But when I'm on the highway, in 3rd and 4th gears, it will take off like a son of a gun and has a lot of get-up-and-go power. I got back to my neighborhood, and I dropped the shifter all the way down to "1" and I gave it the heavy foot treatment, and it just jerked and chugged, and acted like it wanted to die. So I stopped, put it into drive, and it was fine. Any ideas?

Oh and to add, this problem only happens when the transmission fluid is warm, when it's cold, its fine.

How's the fluid? It should be nice and red. Orange or brown shows burnt fluid. Does that car have a kick down cable from the throttlebody. To the trans? If so it might need adjustment.

Are you sure it's not an engine problem? Lack of engine power can cause abnormal and hard shifting.

I think i feel that too, i always blammed it on my car being heavy, i think its fine its not jerkey or anything just takes a minute to get up and go! i love when it down shifts and pulls out of overdrive though! so awesome

Turned out the catalytic converter was so ruined and clogged, that there was a lot of pressure coming back into the engine. This screwed up my O2 sensors, all of them. Therefore, the computer retarded the timing, and adjusted the shift points. I put a new catalytic converter on (a universal cat) and had all o2 sensors replaced for $339.94. They gave me a deal. Car runs great now! No hesitation, great pickup, etc. Thanks for the suggestions!
As for the fluid, the trans was just rebuilt, so the fluid is pinkish red, but you can still smell the burnt smell from the old fluid/parts.

Dont overlook the Throttle Position Sensor. Mine was very sloppy and loose when I recently changed. Your Transmission relies on that to tell it where your foot is..

93 was the last year with the TV cable from the throttle body. That was deleted in 94 when they went to the electronically shifted 4L60E.

How do I Test the TPS to make sure it works?
