I want to replace the fuel pump in my 98 Firebird coup and I want to know if anybody has cut an inspection hole and if so, how do you do it? Tips and tricks for getting the pump out etc.
The steel you need to cut is very mild and cuts easily with ordinary tin snips. That's how I cut mine. If you want to make it look neat, cut about 1" inside the lines with the snips and then use a saw. That way you can see anything you might hit.
Here is a color diagram of the 93-97. I think the 98 is either the same or very similar. Note the purple line (in the inset diagram) going from the tank to the vent valve mounted under the floor ahead of the tank. That may be your hose disconnected from the valve. P.s. there is an unattached hose normally but it is from the EVAP canister, not the tank.
On second thought, I think on a 98 the loose "brown" hose goes to a canister vent valve mounted near the tank vent valve, but am not sure that is on the V6 car. Normally that valve is open to the atmosphere but closes during the EVAP vacuum tests.
OK, I thought you were talking about a hose outside the tank. I have no idea about any hose inside the tank.
