Muffler quiets the exhaust. A resonator is used to tune (up or down) remaining resonant frequency peaks, installed after the primary muffler. You can run a resonator alone (example - SLP "loudmouth" catback system), but it will usually be excessively loud. Your car uses a chambered muffler.
Lots of cheap aftermarket mufflers that will make the engine obnoxiously loud. Usually too loud to pass state or local noise limits (not emissions). Also some quality catback systems the will not only sound louder, but will also add a bit of horsepower - which is more important than noise. Magnaflow and Flowmaster catback systems fall into that category. Muffler by itself isn't going to do much for power.
For the ultimate loud exhaust, you install a "cutout" in the existing exhaust intermediate pipe, opening it up for loud, or keeping it closed for not-so-loud. A cutout can be manual, requiring a cap to be removed, or electrically operated from a switch inside the car.
Ignore the ricer revvers.... I've been headed down the highway to the local drag strip in a car capable of producing 800 HP, following a buddy in his pickup with my 28" slicks, nitrous bottles, and a drum of C16 116-octane leaded racing fuel in the bed, and had these clowns rev..... and totally ignored them.
