Hey Guys,

my Situation is that I am converting an '84 Firebird S/E from a 2.8L Carb Engine to an '86 Caprice Carb Engine. I got the Engine with the entire Wiring and ECM but the connector that has to plug in to the Firewall is too big and I am still having the wiring harness from the 2.8L Carb Engine but I dont know if that will work. The Engine is Chevy 305 LG4 (Low Output) with an Rochester 4 Barrel Carb. So my Question is if the '86 Firebird S/E with the 305 LG4 Carb Engine wiring Hardness will fit/work? Or are you guys recommending to build a wiring harness from scratch?

Thanks in advance

You're going to need the pin out diagram from your car and the pin out diagram for the donor car. Then you're going to have to re-pin the new harness into the old connector. It's kind of a time consuming PITA but it's very do-able if you want to use the caprice wiring harness.

The EASIEST thing to do would be to find an LG4 wiring harness for an 84 F-body. Then it would just be plug & play with no modifications. I'm not real familiar with the carbed wiring harnesses and which years they changed them but you might be able to use another year older or newer as long as it's an LG4 F-body harness. You should be able to find one either on Ebay or in the classifieds on TGO. Those are the two places I've had pretty good luck with finding wiring harnesses for my swaps. Also, don't forget to check out your local junk yards you might find one there too.

If you have a stock tach it will have to be modified to read correctly on the V8. I don't know all the details on it since I usually let my electrical engineer buddy deal with those types of headaches.

I would honestly try to make it run on the original harness. You would need to swap out the disty and carb for a non computer controlled versions. That would eliminate the computer and really the need for that specific harness.

To make what you have work, you will need to repin the connector as suggested above. You'll also have to reuse that C100 connector from the v6 harness, since it sorta incorporates the headlight harness into it. The other option is to try and find a V8 LG4 harness on TGO, Ebay, etc as already mentioned.

Good luck with your swap
