Simple question: did all 1979 Trans Ams have the HisNHers type of shifter where you can manually bump through the gears by moving the handle to the right and up? Or was that an option?

thanks

I believe the only Pontiac to receive the dual-gate Hurst "His & Hers" shifter was the 67 & 68 GTO. But I have seen them retrofitted to various 1st, 2nd and even 3rd Gen Birds. The issue you run into is that the factory shifter plate (with the indicator) won't work because the dual gate requires a wider slot to function in. But a complete dual gate assembly should come with a plate that can be fit into the existing console.

My 79 TA with TH350 does have the oblong slot and the His n Hers function. In a completely stock appearing console.

When I pull the trans to go thru it, I will try to determine the make of the shifter assembly.

thanks for the info.

Got any pictures? Not a firebird option that I'm aware of but sounds cool.

I do not know about "His & Hers" but in changing some 2nd gen shifters I found that some maybe called slap shifters? will allow you to push sideways and then up it will only go up one gear then let go and repeat to go up another gear. or you can push forward and go to any gear you want slowly. I do not know what decided what car got them. They look the same on the outside not much diff on inside.

This is pretty much what a his & hers shifter(dual gate) looks like.

Your's is not a His-N-Hers shifter; it's a factory 2nd Gen unit. Mine looks and functions the same (1980), but is labeled 1, 2, D, N, R, P. You can slide the shifter to the right and manually up- and down-shift while avoiding an accidental slip into neutral or reverse, but when you release, the shifter springs back to the left. Nothing in my RPO codes or build sheet indicates this was an optional unit in 1980.

While its not a factory piece, I did find this on transamcountry.com a few months back and thought it was cool.

This is a "His&Hers" or Dual Gate Shifter by Hurst. I haven't taken the time to try to find one, but I'd definitely like purchase one for a future project. I spoke with the owner of this 1975 Formula and he said he found it on eBay for $500.

EDIT: Looks like $600+. http://www.ebay.com/itm/70-81-Firebird-Trans-Am-73-81-Camaro-Z-28-Hurst-Dual-Gate-Shifter-Complete-/271290325268?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f2a29d914

I had one of those in a '71 Esprit I used to have. I think I bought it at a Super Shops in Indianapolis in the late 70's. Put the stock shifter back in before I sold the car...then sold the Hurst Dual Gate to my brother for his '73 Camaro. Although I really liked the way the Dual gate looked, and at first I would use the "other gate" all the time. However, after awhile I just left it in "D", but still liked the way it gave the console a race car look.
