1979 Pontiac Trans Am Turn Signal Issue

Hello there,

As the title reads, I am having a problem with the turn signal component in my T/A. To be more specific, I have a '79 with the 400 4-speed. The turn signal mechanism will no longer click up or down. If I am lucky and it does click into place, the blinkers do work (so it's not a light bulb or wiring issue). The problem lies solely within the device that allows me to click the lever up or down to activate my blinkers.

I have tried to open up the 1976-1981 Parts Catalog on the site but was unable to. I did just order the '79 Restoration Manual found at http://www.78ta.com/...=0&bestseller=Y so that may help too.

I have not physically tried anything to fix this issue yet. To be honest I am unsure of what to do because I cannot seem to figure out exactly what part I need. I'm afraid that if I take it to a garage they will overcharge and try to make me replace the entire steering column!

Thank you so much for your help.

I agree with Drew, time for a new piece. since you've already narrowed it down it has to be the switch, good luck!

Thanks for the replies guys, I really appreciate it.

I looked into both of those and got a mechanic to take the steering wheel off to see if either of those were the parts I needed. It turns out that I actually need the 'multi function switch', which I have since had much trouble finding. I understand that these are very difficult to find anywhere, salvage or reproduction. If anybody could send me a link to this rare multi function switch that fits the 1979 Firebird Trans Am (without cruise control), I would greatly appreciate it!
