Years ago my 1974 had its wheels and tires stolen. When replacing I had 2 lug bolts replaced, the silver ones. My mechanic claims they are wrong and the raised area is interfering with my Rally 2 wheels. Prior to learning this, a tire shop must have used these wheel spacers to accommodate my replacement wheels. New mechanic says the spacers aren't safe and I need to check nut torque regularly. Any suggestions on how to correct this? Besides the obvious new studs.

I had new tires installed a few years back on my GTO. While driving home, I felt a wobble. got home, seen the shop over tightened the lug nuts, and stripped the studs. The new studs cost about $1.00 each. I changed them myself. Should be able to put all the correct studs in about an hour. Thats all you need to do to have it corrected. Pound them out, feed the new stud in and carefully pull the new stud in with a lug nut, careful not to strip the lug. Im no mechanic, but that how I remember doing it. I dont know of any other way of doing it aside from b uying a replacement rotor. But i think the original steel is much better

The problem isn’t the spacers themselves. I've used them with no problems. NHRA allows use of spacers, but they need to be hub-centric. If you aren’t careful or don’t know what you are doing, the spacer can reduce the number of threads that the lug nut engages, making them easier to strip.

I had to use 5/16” spacers so my front 15” Weld drag “skinnies” would clear the brake caliper. NHRA tech picked up the fact that thread engagement was marginal (NHRA specs require engagement length in the hex portion of the nut must at least equal the diameter of the stud - in that case 12mm). A bit of a stretch, when the wheels used shank style lug nuts that were 1.38” long, threaded their entire length. Bottom line, they wanted to see the end of the stud at least flush with the end of the open-end nut, so longer studs were in order.

The photo of the studs in the first picture appear to indicate the knurl on the stud was too long for the application, and incorrect.

Spacers are ok if they are not the cast type. They crack. Summit sells a billet spacer. I would replace the studs with the correct ones. Way better in the long run.
