Ok, here's the scoop. My Son has a 78 Camaro with an early 80s 305 4bbl truck motor. It runs very well but it is a PIG! The valve guides are worn too(smokes at startup after sitting). We're looking to squeeze some HP out of it on a teenagers budget. It allready has an Edelbrock 600 carb, headers and a 12 bolt with 3:55s and TH350. He's purchased an Edelbrock Performer EPS manifold.
Our plan is to install a new top end over a weekend. (he needs the car for school and work) Please don't bombard us with "Dump that POS 305 and get a nice 350!" The bottom end on the 305 is sound and he can't afford a new short block. All of the parts can be used on a 350 or 383 later.
We want to swap out the heads and camshaft. My Brother has a good set of 350 heads (casting #333882) '70-'80 350, 1.94 int, 1.5 exh. with 76cc chambers. Also looking at Edelbrock (or similar) #2102 camshaft, .420/.442 lift.
Now the questions.
Are the 76cc heads going to be worth the swap? From what I've been able to find out, the heads on it now are 1.84 int, 1.4 exh., not sure of ccs.
Would it be better to find some 64cc heads to raise the compression ratio? And, will the difference in valve size be noticable, or should we go for some 2.02/1.60 heads?
What is your opinion on the cam selection?
Thanks for any help.
