I have had my Bird for about 4 years now and noticed that there is a lot less power than it used to have. Its very sluggish and also very bad on gas. I am one of those live paycheck to paycheck guys so there is not a lot of money for regular maintinance unless it doesnt run. I heard that a bad EGR valve can cause poor performance and bad gas mileage. Its seems like it is more sluggish when it is hot outside. When i try to accelerate it seems like it says "you want me to do what?!" Also I hear a rattle in the cat area so Im wondering if the EGR valve can cause the cat to take a crap? What else could cause that? I want to try and find the original problem so I dont have to replace things over and over. It starts fine and idles fine but acceleration is very slow. Any other ideas? Thank you.

BTW: I also have engine ping (or whatever its called) I think this could also be from the EGR valve but could be from something else. just out of curiosity what causes an EGR valve to go bad? Thanks again.

also, what is the cause(s) for a cat to fail? would it be a rich condition? a few months ago the intake gasket blew and had it fixed. would that have an effect on it? I just want to find the cause now so I dont have to replace it again in a few months. Thank you
