The cam will also make a difference in choice, especially if it was picked for the auto, which it may not have been.

If doing a custom swap of anything, manual or auto, I wouldn't be doing it without an overdrive.
 
Ok, well there's a project for you. Give it an oil change and have a look what you have. No point adding an overdrive trans to a ratio that it isn't suitable for.

Depending on the ratio, your overdrive might be useful at 90 mph.

I just went through this thought with my own. Checked the rear and have 2.41 gears so overdrive won't be needed till I change the gears.
 
Good to know anyway, and in your case, good to know it won't be simply a case of swapping the gears but also the carrier, GM applications anyway. Then you can keep an eye out locally for things that pop up even when not ready for it.
