I got a 1979 firebird not long ago with a 403 with matching th350 with only 58327 miles on it the steering is xxxxxx from the wheel lifting and the play in the turning I have 3/4 the wheel play before turn of the tires at all and my steering wheel moved up and down while driving this isn’t safe any tips on where to start?

Check the rag joint between the steering column and the steering box for the play problem. The steering wheel lifting sounds like the "tilt" mechanism is toast if it just moves up and down and not sideways too. Just have to take it apart and see what's wrong.
