I spent yesterday replacing the original oil pan gasket in my '99 and found it to be a pretty straight forward job. Not as bad as I thought it would be. It did take me 6 hours in my garage. A lift would have made it much easier. So, I found this universal engine support at Harbor Freight and after using a 20% off coupon, it cost me under $60.00 and worked like a champ. After supporting the engine from above, I removed the exhaust Y-pipe, loosened the AC compressor, and removed both engine mount long bolts. I disconnected the steering joints from the rack and pinion, removed the lower stock mount bolts, placed a jack under the sub frame and removed the 6 retaining bolts. I lowered the subframe about 4 inches and raise the engine about 1" using the engine support fixture. The oil pan was easily removed at that point. I used a Felpro gasket which advised against using RTV except at the joints where the front cover and rear bearing cover meet the block. I used a small dab in those areas. Overall, not a bad job and certainly worth trying in order to save the $600.00 I was quoted by a local independent shop.

I agree with SeaDog, well done. Another solution might have been cribbing the tires.

Where did you attach the chains to support the engine?
