Replacing front speakers

I have a 1984 Firebird. I am in the process of replacing the front speakes under the dash. The right speaker went in without any issues. The left one is a different story. The base of the speaker is too large in diameter to fit in the opening. There is a plastic piece that is in the way. My question is what will happen if I trim the plastic back so the speaker will clear?
