Welcome to FBN.

Other than the rust issues Mike mentioned, there really isn't too much to worry about.
Also, like Mike said, be aware of the front end suspension. Mike was right about the 305 on down for engines in 81's but if the car you're looking at is a base model Firebird, you probably had a 3.8 V6 in there. The only problem with this would be incorrect coil springs for the weight of the block. They are easily replaced and they're not too expensive.

Being that the car already has a 400 in it, you've got a nice head start to a good performance motor and the ECM has probably been removed/discarded which is where most of your driveability issues would stem from.

If the car is in good shape rust wise and seems somewhat mechanicaly sound, I'd say make an offer. 81' was the last model year for the 2nd gen body style. Owning an 81' Formula myself, I think it's pretty cool to have the last year of a production model.

If you talk to the owner, I'm sure he'd allow you to take some pics of the car so you can post them here for us to look at. That way, we could give you more of an idea of what you're looking at.

Either way, good luck with the possible purchase and keep us updated on whats going on.

I've seen 77/78 front ends on a 79/81 car and vice versa. Tail lights too. It's gonna be your car, do what you want.

I'm a sucker for Formula's. Not quite the same as the "Screamin Chicken" cars, but cool allto there own.

Good luck with the search!
