I use RTV on the removable side of most all gaskets. ie, thermostat neck, Oil Pan, Timing cover, valve covers. Then I lightly grease or oil the other side. That way, the gasket stays with the removable piece, and is easier to remove down the road. If sealing surfaces are good and not warped, RTV on both sides is not needed and will just cause ripping of the gasket when you have to remove it and then scraping it off the block side.
 
Double check that your water neck and intake sealing flange are straight. It is common the water neck can warp a bit and you will never seal it. Can just sand/file them flat again
