Old school wheels

249 Views 13 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  sleepyhollowtaman
My late friend in the late 70's had a blue 72 Formula 400 with 10'x15" Crager S/S on the back w/super fat meat on the rear and some skinny ones up front, not a big fan of the Funny car look but the 10's on the back I think look cool. Any pics of some wheels like that on a T/A? Whats the widest tire wheel combo I can get away with on the back? I'm not afraid of putting some Highjackers on. I will be installing oval Indy style cutouts terminated in front of the rear wheels.

They are not old school but, this is what's on my 75 TA. Rears are 18x10 5.5 bs and 285/40/18. I have run 295's and 305's will fit. When I ran stock 15's, I ran either MT 28-12.5 or Hoosier Quick Time Pros.28-11.5. Here is old pick. Yes she sat high. I did lowered her 2". Took a lot of weight off the front. These are the Hoosier ties.

.5-15. MT's run small for the size. I went to see Smokey and the Bandit opening day in a black 76 TA that had Mickey Thompson M50-15's. They were HUGE.

Those 10" rims fit with no problem. I'm thinking 15"x 12" Crager SS. Everything is metric now and I don't fully get it, no letters just numbers. I put 335's on the back of my Pantera and they loked very substantial. How wide and tall of a tire do you think I can get away with? Do you have a pic of the 12" wheels on your car? That's bad ass looking car BTW. Show pics of the cage.

The tires on the 4x4 pick are 11" wide. I haven't purchased 305's but measuring they will fit. Will stick out about 1/4". Most people don't see the cage. Alston 8 point roll cage. I will take some pics this weekend.
G70-15 were 225/70/15. L70-15 were 235/70/15 in metric. I like the new designations. One knows how wide they are.
I bet that cage stiffens everything up nice.

Yes it does. Before the cage, my TA was the most rattle free second gen f body I have ever been in. Not so much now but, I can't hear them over the exaust.

In your Pantera example “335” is the section (sidewall-to-sidewall) width of the tire In millimeters. To convert that to inches, divide by 25.4

335 / 25.4 = 13.2”

There is also a formula method to determine the sidewall (section) height from the aspect ratio (”70” would indicate the sidewall height is 70% of the section width). Add two sidewall heights to the diameter of the wheel and you have the overall tire diameter.

Converting letter (F, G) sizes is more complex.

If I get the 15x12 Cragar SS, what should the back spacing be ? What is the fattest and the tallest tire I can use ? Can I go with a 15x8 or bigger on the front ? I'm not against running a Jap tire like the Proxie 888, they have a real bitchin tread pattern and have a good rating, I bought these for my Pantera due to they were the only matched set I could get for the custom Boyd Cottington wheels, I like BFG's too. I have looked at the rear wheel wells a 100 times, looks to be a ton of room back there.
I ran a Hoosier 28X11.5. It fit with the stock 4.5" backspace. I can fit 305's in the back with no problem. Before I dropped her, I could run a 29x11.5 4.5" bs without issues. 29x12.5 with 4" bs. You must be from California because the tires were real bitchin. I used to live a couple blocks from Disneyland.
The Cragar 08/61 S/S 15x12 has a 4.5" BS and fits a 4 1/2"-5" bolt pattern. So you think I can run a 305/60 without jacking it up with some High Jackers? As for the front can I run a 245/60 on 15x8 rim? what would be the BS on the front? I need to be careful, tires and wheels are Mucho Dinero and can't return them. I'm a hundred miles south of D land. My life and political beliefs do not line up with the management of this place but, I took my Grand Kids a month or so ago for 4 days, it was incredible! The snow line in the surrounding mountains and foothills was so low it looked like LA was covered in snow. The new rides in the Star Wars section was insane good. The night time outdoor shows were like Las Vegas x 100. WE spent 8K and I think it was money well spent. The 1st time I went was 1966, it has changed a lot, Orange County was exactly that, no buildings, orange groves as far as you could see.

I grew up in the 70's in SoCal.

Summit sells a cheap fixture to check what you can fit. I would get one or see if your local wheel seller has one. I ran 255/60/15 on stock 15x7 with stock bs. They were Rally 2. The rear. I can run 305/40/18. I don't know if a 305/60 would work. The tallest tire I could run , before I lowered her, was a 29" tall tire 11.5" wide. This pic was before I lowered her 2". Same tires still fit. 2nd pic is lowered 2". 275/60/15 and 255/60/15 on Ralley 2's

I do not have many pics of that. I will take better pics this weekend at the Heidts open house/car show. The rear curves to follow the back glass. The front bars do not go into the dash. That took a lot of work so I didn't have to modify the dash. It's a full 8 point
