I have an 1989 5.7 GTA with 133k and everytime the car warms up, the oil pressure drops from 30 to 0 and the temp goes to 240. I changed the oil, filter, radiator fluid, and air filter. I just don't get it, there is a very slight oil leak from the pan but not around the heads, it is clean. Do I need a new oil pump or are the rings bad. It was a police impound (sat for 18 months) and has had a rough 18 years. I am restoring the car but don't want to spend a fortune just yet. Any thoughts?

Sounds like you have 2 seperate problems. For the oil pressure I would try changing the oil pressure sensor first. It should be on the back of the block. Thats what sends info to the gage.

For the getting hot be sure the drivebelt is adjusted properly, be sure radiator is not plugged with debris in front, possible bad thermostat, could be a weak cap or ignition timing off.

the pressure may be due to a bad pump as well, check that out, and do your fans come on when the temp gets that high?

Thanks for the advice! I am putting a new oil pump and thermostat in it on Friday. I am hoping that these easy fixes will solve the problem. I will then attempt to drive it from St. Louis to Chicago

(where it has sat since I bought it in April) with AAA Gold card in hand.

You also might wanna check out the fp/op snesor located above the oil filter. THe tend to go out more frequently. hth

Oh and as for the temp I agree its probably the temp sensor.good luck

I had a really bad overheating problem on my formula. The first thing I did was replace the thermostat not thinking it would be such an easy fix but sure enough it was. All together it ran me a whopping 8 bucks for the gasket and thermostat lol. I would def. try the thermostat like stroked said.

So far, I have flushed the radiator (it wasn't bad at all), checked the thermostat (still working), changed the oil and filter, and checked all the head gaskets (they are not leaking). I will try some of the other things mentioned and post later this week. I still have not taken off the oil pan and checked the pump.
