I used to have a red '69 Mach 1 in the '80s, and never lost my love for healthy V8s. So I almost bought a friend's '69 yellow Corvette. After a year of anticipation that eventually fell through, I thought "Hmm, maybe an automatic, trunk & 4 seats aren't the worst thing..." - and bought this base '79 'Bird with a pretty stout '71 YS400.

Feels like I'm cheating on my '69 Ford by switching to GM, but I always liked this body style. So here I am. :)

Super-clean NV car. Kinda minimalist, but not exactly stock. PS, PB, AC, tops, 64k on body & 4k on motor. So far, so good!

Nice. Looks like it just rolled out of the showroom, maybe even better.

Great to have you here.

Lol, I too learned to drive with a 67 Mustang fastback. Then one awesome day my dad brought home the formula that I now own.

Nothing wrong with any model of bird. There are other models besides Trans Am, lol.

The 1979-1981 body stylings are my favorite of the 2d generation cars.

Welcome! :)

Thanks! I'm actually both in Chicago & Decatur, IL, and about to find out what kind of mileage that '71 YS400 block will get going down I-57. (Not that I'll be commuting those 200mi regularly in this one; I have a tiny but highly efficient Honda Del Sol for that!) :)

Added a few more pics; the underside of this NV/CA car is quite amazing - especially since I've been looking at Midwestern cars for a while now (salt, rust...ugh). So when I saw this one I jumped on it!

I do have a few simple newbie questions; feel free to steer me to the other forums. Did the base cars really come with a single, chromed driver's side rear view mirror, or did the PO change that from the body-colored ones I see on other cars? Not having a passenger side mirror may get tricky, especially around Chicago!

Thanks,
Oliver

Welcome ! I’m in Peotone so you drive right by me. In the summer there is a car show…last year we had 300 cars in our small down town area. I’ll post the date when it gets closer….be good to have some fellow Firebird owners there.
