hood tach

Got around to wiring the factory hood tach, I have lights and no tach movement, ran one wire as ground, one as power, one to tach lead on the hei

This is an original tach not a repop, any ideas? I had a column mounted tach that worked just want this working instead if possible

I did a Google search and saw where some said there was an issue with hei others said no but unsure if they are talking original or repop tach

I don't know if it will work with the HEI or not. Do you know if the tach works? Maybe if you know someone still on points you could test it. Sorry not any help just some thoughts.
I saw this mentioned on my Google search with no real explination, but just as many saying it did work with hei so ??
Something to do with the way the tach reads the signal. I just read a bazzilion threads on it, and apparently you need some sort of filter/module to make it work.
I have the points distributor, would need a coil and different plug wires, if I put that dizzy in I would get a petronix for it, does that also make the tach not work?

I read all the same articles probly and there was no clear answer IMO, guess I need to pull it and try on another car

OK so today was an exercise in futility , dropped in the points dist. Timed it hooked up hood tach, notta, pulled the tach and opened it like I should have done in the first place and it is fubar

Can I retrofit some other guts?does someone rebuild these? Or do I just need to buy a repop?

I am sorry to hear that. I sure did love my hood tach. Yeah if you had opened that it would have saved you switching over it looks like a lot of corrosion. Do you have the later hood tach? I thought the 67's were taller.

I don't know anything about the guy but here is a link.

there was a co in so cal that put VDO guts in them. They did the one for my Judge.North Hollywood speedo.Dont know if they are still in biz or still does them. You might call Scott Tieman at SuperCars in MI.He restores tons on pontiacs and I would bet he has a guy that does them.Tom
Thanks guys

Tach is marked 68 inside
Try the services section of Hemmings motor news. It's sold at book stores that have a magazine section. Hemmings also has a web site. http://www.hemmings.com

There is usually several instrument restorers advertising their service.
I will probly just go aftermarket since this will never because this will never be a # correct show car

Anyone know if the aftermarket 6 cyl hood tach will work with a v8 , is there a switch like normal aftermarket tachs

Got a repop 67 version, had to elongate the 2 existing holes at lens end and drill 2 holes for the other end since my old one was a 68 model, included harness was OK tach lead was a mile long and I had to make the ground longer to reach the stock location but its in and works

This unit is not glued shut its sealed like original with gaskets, I may glue it shut after the cars painted

Also there was a pair of posts sticking off the bottom I had to cut off, found a pic of OEM 67 , the holes should be there but not the posts

Cool. Wonder how accurate those things are.
If I remember I will also hook up the dwell/tach meter next time I work on her and see

When you turn key on it does full sweep then zeros
Nice! I just ordered a repop for my sprint, thanks for the info
I just came across this post. I have the factory hood tach with my factory distributor and points. I am thinking of switching to a pertronix points conversion. Does anyone know if my factory hood tach will continue to work?

It should work with the petronix's conversion as it connects to the coil.

I got a re-pop hood tach and it worked wired straight to the TACH spade on the HEI I have. Don't know how accurate it is. My dash tach and hood tach are 300 RPM different. Not sure which one is right but from the way the engine seems at idle, the hood tach is more believable. But I didn't add the hood tach for accuracy, I added it because they are just total bad ass.
