Hello everyone I just picked up a 4mv qjet carb for super cheep. It obviously needs a rebuild and I'm planning on that next week but I want to replace my holly spreadbore out for this 4mv when it's done only question is, the 4mv has an external choke I'm wondering if I can find one to work with this carb and my Pontiac 455 first time rebuilding a carb but I know this one will be better then my haggerd holly. If anyone can point me in the right direction or offer some info it would be greatly appreciated

I assume you are referring to the "divorced" choke, which came on most '72 and older Pontiac Q-jets.

IF you are running a '68-'72 Pontiac intake, you can buy the original type choke, which bolts to the intake. Or, there are some carb shops that sell electric choke conversion kits, which bolt in the same place on the intake as the original. I think the Performer intake has a place where you can bolt the choke. But most other aftermarket intakes do not have a provision for the bolt on choke.

Is there possibly a way to convert this to an electric choke
Yes, if you have a '68-'72 Pontiac intake, or a #2156 Performer intake. But, most other intakes don't have a place to bolt the choke to. I suppose you might be able to fab up some sort of base, to bolt the choke to. The base would need to be held in place with one or both of the center intake bolts.

As you can see, in the 1st pic below, there is no provision for a bolt-on choke, on the RPM intake.

Pontiac Q-jets began having the hot air type choke in '73, I believe. These can be easily swapped out for an electric choke, and will work on any intake.

You guys have been extramly helpful thank you! One more question is that first link pony posted made for the 4mv or will it work with it rather? I heard there were different housings and roads depending on what carb you have

The description of that 1st one says it is for a 1968-'70 model Pontiac. So it will bolt up to a factory '68-'70 Pontiac intake manifold, and hook up properly to a 1968-'70 Pontiac Q-jet. But, if you'll look closely at the intake pics I posted, the later model intake has a slightly different choke mount. I suppose that is why the base mounts for the 2 electric chokes I posted have the holes in slightly different positions.

Also, if your Q-jet is not a Pontiac model, the choke hook-up may be slightly different. If you are running an alum intake, which doesn't have a provision to bolt up a choke, you may be able to use the electric conversion for another GM model, since you'll have to fab some sort of choke bracket, for the choke to attach to. They are listed for Caddilac, Chevy and Buick--probably others too.

Here are 3 shown on Ebay. If you fab your own, you may need to modify the rod which connects to the choke. And you'll definitely have to adjust the choke properly, AFTER you get the base securely attached to your mounting bracket. :smile22:
