Patient.
81 Firebird Formula with 305 4barrel Q-jet. Bone stock...
Symptoms. (as reported be principal operator, unable to reproduce).
Car is a unsafe to drive and a hazard to all other vehicles, pedestrians, and ornamental plantings whenever it goes over the overpass. Gas pedal and engine both resist accelerating, and the choke light comes on, steering quites working, and so do the brakes. Whenever it does this, it smells of gas.
My interpertation and trials so far.
The car sometimes just quits. No warnings, just a couple sputters and it dies (she says it's jerking).
I've taken the car over the overpass at various speeds and throttle settings, both with her driving, and with me. Nothing ever happens with me in the car. I need to tear into something, but I'm not sure what to do. I've checked the choke, and it appears to be operating correctly, and I've had a quick look at the vaccuum lines. I took it out for a good 20 minutes last night, driving up as many hills as I could find. The only thing I noticed was the brakes are in need of replacement, and the timing appears a bit off.
With the report of gas fumes, It sounds like it may be the carb, but what would make the car flood out when going up hills?? The car has ran rich before, but never to the point of quitting. The carb is a rebuilt replacement, so it doesn't need to be rebuilt. It may need to be tweaked a bit. I'm just not sure how to check or replicate the problem.
Any ideas on what could be causing this, and how to do some directed troubleshooting??
Thanks.
