I was in the city lastnight looking for a parking space after a short, non aggressive ride from the movie theater to a rib joint... reved the engine one good time then started hearing a knocking noise... i immediately pulled over, popped the hood and tried to pinpoint it... the best i could come up with is that it was coming from the passenger side of the engine toward the front up top, maybe even in front of the block itself... the engine seemed to be running fine, the knock had the repetition or speed of a bad lifter but didnt "tap" like a lifter does, i had a 40 mile trip home, It was 12am and i had to be @ work @ 6am... so i took it waaaay easy on the way back... by the time i got home, the knock was gone... i stopped and restarted the engine a couple times and there was no knock... i had checked my fluids prior to the trip and took it easy on the way downtown... i started it again this am and there was no knock... decided to drive it in so i could take a better look @ things... my fluids levels are fine, no leaks, nothings out of place and the engine runs fine... i have been told that Ls1's have a very subtle "knock" or noise that the engine makes... not sure if there is truth in that or not... but i have heard it on a 99 camaro and had noticed it in my car since i got it back in september... i heard THAT noise and it seems to be coming from a pulley or something belt driven... not sure what to think @ this point... ANY advice or insight would be greatly appreciated...

thanks for the feed back. i will get that done asap! appreciate it man

Ls1's or known for noisy valvetrain. But go get your computer scanned for codes. Even if the check engine light didn't light up the codes are saved in to memory.

i had hoped you would look @ this and drop some knowledge lol... my pops just got back from Germany today and was sitting w me as i was going through the responses. he said that was the first thing he thought as well... so, looks like THAT will be addressed when i determine and can afford a cam upgrade... sooooo, w the tranny slippin, and now THIS... my blak dymond is going to sit this summer... its got 105k miles on it so the wear and tear is to be expected... thanx again and the feed back was much appreciated

Sounds like what happened when I overrevved a Gen 1 SBC, and one of the rocker studs pulled out a ways (push-in, not screw in studs). It kept knocking for a few minutes until the lifter pumped up and filled the gap. I suspect the LS1's have screw in studs, which would eliminate that situation.

yea, wasnt too worried about it (milage) wasnt expecting to be addressing THESE issues just yet. i was looking forward to the bolt ons for starters. but i see this as an opportunity rather than a set back... it may take some time but she will be a nice one when i finally get her done... thanx again, u guys are awesome

Fred the only time I seen a bent pushrod is if it is reved really hard and is bounced off the rev limiter and is very rare it happens in an auto. Most of the time it is in a 6 speed. Also if a bent pushrod happened it will run like crap and not tix itself.

Don't worry about your mileage. A 105000 is nothing for miles on an ls1. When I sold mine it had 148000 on her and still ran strong and pulled low 12 second passes at the track. I did my head and cam swap around 118000 miles.

well, im glad to report that it is NOT valve train related... i pulled the car out on memorial day from the cold garage into 75+ heat and the windows immediately fogged... so i turned the defrost on and the noise came back... turned it off and the noise went away... needless to say i was extatic... i would much rather address a heating / cooling issue than tearing into the engine... it hadnt dawned on me that could be the problem... as i had stated initially, it didnt sound like valves, but i wasnt sure... i just knew the general vacinity of the knock was more to the front rather than in and of the engine itself... still not positive as to what the problem is... i will get that diagnosed on payday... Thank you again, guys for ur feedback / input... have a great day!

would it make a knocking noise? i mean it was loud to the point it was alarming... it was just wierd... i will definitely have it checked out asap...

So you turned your switch on. Check your blower motor you could have some trash that is caught inside hitting the motor.

im not positive that i would recognize that if i heard it... if i can get a clear recording, i will post a video of it within the next couple of days... the car fires damn near perfect every start up... occationally, i will hear it whine a lil and that goes away by the time i've pulled out of the garage...

sounds like piston slap. mine will slap on start up a bit and go away after a bit of driving; it can still come and go though.

honestly, the bearing going bad would sound logical or consistant to what im hearing... im not 100 on that though...im going to have it checked out this week (hopefully) but i feel you, i dont need the heat right now and it could wait, but i would rather address it before i NEED the heat this fall and im rolling @ in a car that sounds like crap. i hate that lol

its most likely the blower motor, mine makes noises in my 98, due to trash and i think the bearing is going out in it, but it still works, so ill keep using mine til i finally goes, lol.....
