recently purchased 400 (Jasper Class II rebuild) idles at 1,000. Any lower than that, you have to keep a foot on the accelerator when shifting into reverse to back out of the driveway. Vacuum line from carb was disconnected by prior owner.
It has a mild cam, is bored .040 over and has #48 Ram Air III heads. Anyway, I heard horror stories from the mechanic who installed the rebuild about pleading with the prior owner to replace the existing HEI to no avail. I had it in the shop for other reasons last week and asked them to check the timing. They told me the initial set is 35 degrees. I figured 12-14 would make more sense? They also told me to get a new distributor. I ordered a new HEI from Summitt racing last night (it might best be described as a mild performance ignition). I have no timing light, limited tools and no idea how to set timing. Should I take it to a mechanic or try this one myself? Before anyone replies, I cannot buy anything to assist with the install.
