Hi all, I have just joined this site. I have a 1970 Firebird that I have been restoring for quite some time now. I am having trouble with the oiling on the original 350, and rather than monkey with it I would like to build up something different and save my stock engine. I have the choice between a 400 out of a '78 Grand Prix, or a '71 455. I don't know much about either of the engines although the 455 has been in a dirt track racer so it's most likely going to need a rebuild. I am just wondering what would be a better engine to go with. I don't plan to beat the thing more than a couple backroad burnouts. I would most likely rebuild either engine to "just above stock". I think I would like to go with the 400, because of the better gas milage and less fear of getting crazy and breaking something. But I am concerned about whether or not the 78 is a good year to start with? I know a lot about mechanics, but when it comes to specific things like this, I am less than an expert. Also, I would like to replace my ailing TH350 with a Muncie M21 I have, but am also afraid of breaking that with a 455. Any advice would be appreciated, or if someone could point me to an earlier 400 in Wisconsin that would also be helpful!
Thanks, Tom
