I have a ‘79 Trans Am with a Pontiac 400. I live in  PA near the New Jersey border. I’m hoping someone can recommend a honest, reliable, reputable engine builder. I want to keep the engine as stock appearing as possible but would like to get 400 rear wheel HP. I can’t seem to find anyone that fits the bill and will return my phone calls. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Butler Performance in Lawerenceburg Tennessee has a very good reputation for building bulletproof Pontiac performance engines.

Thanks Tony. They’re probably one of the best. I was looking for someone closer to home.

I don't know how far Hatfield PA is from you - but Paul Spotts at Spotts performance has a great rep. I've not had any engine work done, but have bought tons of stuff off of his site.

Spotts performance is about 1/2 hour south of me. I’ve called him and emailed him and got no response.  I would love to have someone with his reputation build my engine. I just can’t get a hold of him. If anyone knows how to get in contact with Paul, please let me know.

Hate to say this, but give up on Paul.

Looked at the website, appears it hasn't been updated since early 2011.  Called both numbers on the site.  2336 is disconnected, 2337 rings endlessly, no machine?  Google Earthed the "business address" which is actually a residence with a garage out back whose driveway is packed full of pickup-trucks.   ...then got to thinking, "old timer".    Maybe he retired? Or worse?

...or worse.  He passed away in 2015.

I can give you a name of a PA performance shop the does amazing work.  But I have no idea if they have any Pontiac experience.  They are totally into high HP builds utilizing EFI, forced induction and nitrous.  Ford, Chevy, Dodge, some imports.  I have seen old school cars in the shop, Corvettes in particular.  They built the LT1 in my Formula, a friends LT1 1997 Camaro that held the fastest/quickest LT1 record for two years, 20 years ago.  Their own NMRA Pro 5.0 Mustang was extremely competitive in national level racing.

Unfortunately have no idea if they would do a Pontiac rebuild.  Might find it more attractive if it was an aggressive performance build.   Realize it’s probably not exactly what you are looking for, but lacking any other input,  it is in eastern PA

Might be worth a call:

Thanks Tony for the info about Paul. Sad to hear the news, but at least I know why I couldn’t get a hold of him.

Man - hate to hear that.

I've had Butler do two short blocks for me over the years. Top shelf work. I think they are at least one builder that you can have work done and not have to drive to check on it. Great reputation.
