Hi.  I have a strange block.  Casting number 9790071, with no engine code or VIN stamp on it.  Date code D088.  It has '62' heads sitting on it. 

 

I have not been able to find anything on these codes:

• On the back next to the date code is a D->N, and below it a 10 (see pic) - what is that D->N 10 meaning?
• In the front near the frost plug there is a 'GM10'.  What is that referring to

 

This is supposed to be a RA(III) engine, but I can't tell what I have here.  Is there anyone that can explain this block with no engine or VIN codes?

 

In the end... I'm wondering how much to put into this block.  It's in a 69 TA.

The code will be on the pass side of the block beneath the head.Vin number is on the pass side of the block just next to the timing cover.Block casting number is on the pass side rear of the block.Tom

@tjs... Thanks.  I am aware of those locations, but there is nothing in either of those locations.... completely blank.  The casting number is in the pic attached.  That is why my question... why no engine or vin on the block?

The GM10 means nothing.I see its a auto engine.There should be a EUN number under the head where the code should be.My guess its not the original block to the car.FYI,the only thing unique to a 69 TA block is the code.IF a RA III its just a 2 bolt block like all other 400 engines that year.Do you have the PHS on the car?The EUN will be on it I believe.Tom

@tjs... there is nothing there.  it is a 2-bolt block.  I have the PHS, but with nothing on the engine there is nothing to tie to.

 

Why would this be bare?

I cant read the date code on the driver side rear of the block,looks like there is a 8 at the end which would be 1968.The D shows it was cast in the day.The casting number should be on the other side of the block on the pass side.Those numbers are cast in when they are poured.The EUN,code and vin are stamped in when they are assigned to a car.Tom

@Tom aka Firebird Mechanic.  I have the knowledge on the date and engine castings.  What is strange is why is there no VIN or engine code stamped non the block?

What is the casting number?Not sure why no vin or code,no SR number either?No eun?Very strange.Would love to see a pic of the front of the block but being together and in the car not much help.Tom
