Doesn't seem to serve a useful purpose. It confuses new people who constantly post questions there and don't use the forums to start threads. So, less threads, dead forum.

We've kept it because the Chat room software died and AutoGuide hasn't bothered to replace it. It's the only way we have to chat between people outside of private messages.

I never saw anyone use the chat. I went there several times and stayed in while using another window to respond in threads. Did anyone actually ever use the chat?

I think in all the years I've been here I never looked at Chat, and only looked at the Shout Box once many years ago when there were some problems with people there.

90% of the forums should be deleted to streamline the site, but expecting VS to do anything is delusional. Sad, but true.

Well if the forum continues on it's current path I suspect it will be a ghost town soon and become just a data base for google searches. Thought I'd mention the chat box elimination as a way to get the few new people to start threads so activity would increase.

I understand your concerns.

Sites like this are struggling.  I have been on CamaroZ28.com for 21 years.  There are over 110,000 members.  I am the only moderator left, the Administrator hasn't signed in for 3 years, some days there are no posts at all.  Most of the traffic is from newbie LT1 owners, and I suspect that the fact GaryDoug, Shoebox and I are still there is the only reason they post, looking for help.

Everyone tells me that people use Facebook and other social network sites now.  Fortunately, Internet Brands, who bought CamaroZ28.com about 10 years ago is very good at sorting out problems and keeping things up to date, running smoothly.  I've tried for years to get support from the Administrator and the previous owners to revamp the site to make it more attractive, but no one wants to help.

It's depressing.

I remain in favor of the Shout Box.  Google was mentioned.  The more often a page updates, the higher up in the ranks it goes.  Our main page is static without that box.  Maybe if we redirected "view new content" to be our main index I could get behind removing it, but as Injuneer pointed out, good luck with that.

Besides, I need that box, it's the only way I can keep track of Mondays and Fridays.   No snark there, Layna's "Happy $_Day FBN!"  is mostly how I realize the week is over or just begun.

What would be really nice is if we could simply set the default for the box to be "collapsed".  New members wouldn't be distracted by it, and those who use it could leave it open.

I agree with Injuneer, the site needs cleaned up and streamlined, but it's not something we can do.  The best we can do is be here, thick & thin.

lol, thanks Tony.

I think we could change the message at the top of shout (in the Admin Panel) to be quicker to read and better at explaining where the search is and that questions need to be posted in the forums. Most people we get here are used to using Facebook..., so find a box and ask a question. Many have no idea how to use forums.

Well scratch that. I don't have permissions to change anything in the Shoutbox. Booooo

I don't think changing the text itself will help, there is already red text there to catch the eye, and nobody sees it. maybe change the colors.  Red background (not pure red) to really draw the eye, and whatever color text that contrasts well.  I'm sure there are a couple here who would want to hang me for saying this, and i'm one of them, but, BRING BACK BLINK TAGS!

I went and searched for how long it's been since there were new posts and discovered that part of the reason I think the forum is dying is because I don't get all of the new posts from "view new content". All I've seen show up for about the past week is this thread and the 3rd gen aerowing thread. No other threads come up. Anyone else find that is happening to them?

Look to the left on the new content page, there is a menu titled By Time Period for how far back "view new content" looks.  Thats probably set wrong.  I have mine at "past week". There are other choices below as well which can affect what is displayed.

Tried this ^^ and  I still only get the two threads, no Catalina or other threads.

If your settings are like mine, it should be working.  I would suggest logging out, clearing your browsers cache, and signing back in.   The only time I've seen the new content page "bare" is when I've changed those settings by accidentally hitting them when scrolling.  Something might be "stuck" on your end.  Have you tried changing those settings and putting them back?
