Does anyone know how to search the options a Firebird was built with? I have checked the different recomended sites for the vin with only getting vague information. I have searched on here, but didnt see anything specific enough. I've come to learn that there are a few gurus around here.. I cannot find Rpo codes anywhere either. And there was no build sheet behind or under the backseat. My bird is 1980 Formula.
Any direction would be great.
Thanks in advance.

You can get a build sheet from Pontiac Historic Services. http://www.phs-online.com/

It's not a Build Sheet that PHS supply but the original options ordered. Unless you have something quite valuable it probably isn't the best money spent. Other general options can be read off the build plate, not all, just some, engine, paint and trim, build location.

The Body Tag, under the hood near the windshield VIN, will give you more information than the VIN will. The Body Tag contains the "RPO" information before RPO's existed.

If you get the info from the tag and post it here, we can help decode it for you.

There is a limited amount of information available on the tag. What info were you wanting to find?

Thanks for the response. My body tag is as follows:

80 01E 2FS87 N 093795
2B 80L 80U . L
A51 . . 67M
TAN 060167

A friend believes this could be a ws6 Formula, as it has disk brakes all around, Snowflake wheels, and thicker away bars.

Any help would be stellar!

Could the 2B number in second row be missing a digit, 62B?

And not sure what the 67M in 3rd row is. This area is usually for any misc production codes, but they usually start with a letter.

80 - Model Year

01E - Assembly Date

01 - January

E - Fifth Week

2 - Division number

2 - Pontiac

F - Body Type

F - Firebird

S - Series - If marked as S, not to worry, it left Fisher Body plant as Firebird, but were often made into other models at the GM Plant.

S - Firebird

T - Esprit

U - Formula

W - Trans Am

X - Pace Car Trans Am

87 - Body Style (2-Door Coupe)

N - Assembly Plant

N - Norwood, OH

093795 - Fisher Body Unit Number

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

62B - Interior Trim Code

62B Camel Cloth

80L - Lower Body Paint Code

80 Fiero Bronze

80U - Upper Body Paint Code

80 Fiero Bronze

L - Paint Type

L - Lacquer Based Paint

---------------------------------------------------------

A51 - Bucket Seats

67M -

---------------------------------------------------------

TAN - Secondary Interior Color

Tan

060167 - Fisher Time Date Code

Fisher Body Production Number: This was the actual production number of the body when it rolled off the line at the Fisher Body Plant. No, this does not match the Pontiac Production number located at the end of your VIN number. These were two totally different plants between GM and Fisher, so these numbers don't match and are not supposed to match. Also, the production number is not relative to the car...... meaning that this production number was relative to the cars rolling off the Fisher Body Plant's line which included more than just the Firebird/Trans Am car line.

Fisher Body Time/Date Code: This area was used for the Fisher Body Plant and was the Time and Date code for when the car was built. Now since quite some time has passed since these cars were built, some information is just lost and figuring out what exactly thius code is or how to decode it has been lost to time. I have not seen any solid information yet that has decoded this time and date stamp.

Thank you very much, that is very helpful. That is exactly what is still on the car to this day. I was just also curious as to how perhaps I would look to find out if it was a WS6? Or if WS6 formulas were actually available?

Yes Formula's were available with the WS6 option.

If it was intended to be a WS6 at the time it was still at Fisher, there would be a WS6 on the body tag. But they were cranking them out quickly so it may not have started in the production process (at Fisher Body) as a WS6. When it got to the GM plant, and a dealer requested a WS6 car, the GM plant would have built it that way. Not uncommon for this to happen. Same thing with the Model, Firebird, Esprit, Formula, Trans Am

The only way to verify with 95% accuracy is to get the Dealer Invoice from Pontiac Historical Services www.phs-online.com. The Dealer Invoice was how the car was ordered by the dealer. I say it's 95% because I have personally known of a few discrepancies. My car has 1. Dealer Invoice says it was ordered as an M-20 transmission. It has an M-22 and the VIN number on the M-22 matches the rest of the car. That isn't something that the dealer could change and still have the correct VIN on it.

By what you've described, it sounds like it has everything that came with the WS6 option.

Norwood often stamped extra options like that but not Van Nuys.
