1995 Firebird steering wheel controls glitching (need fix)
Posted 01 May 2020 - 07:09 PM
Finally got my firebird running again and in the years it sat it seems to have developed a new problem. The steering controls depending on the button, vary between being either by and large unresponsive (the mute button) to oversensitive (seek) and most vexingly the channels will change at random while I'm driving with no buttons being pushed, nor does it matter if the steering wheel is dead straight or turned.
Also did the buttons on the 1995 firebird steering wheel controls ever light up? Because in the decade I've owned it they never did, or was that only on later models.
I'm hoping someone has dealt with this and can tell me how to fix this.
Thanks in advance
Ps. Will a later model 2001 firebird steering wheel and controls work with my wiring and head unit? A local wrecking yard may have one.

According to the 95 service manual, yes it does have lighting on the steering wheel controls. Pretty sure bulbs are replaceable.
According to later wiring diagrams, the 98-02 assembly is different enough from earlier ones that it would take a high level of electronic & wiring knowledge to use later steering wheel control on an earlier car.
You can get 93, 94, 95, 96, 98, 99, & 2000 service manual at following link. Also 99-02 wiring diagrams by themselves.http://www.mediafire.../?40mfgeoe4ctti

It's not necessary to swap the entire steering wheel from the 2001 model; the buttons can be removed after you remove the air bag. As a matter of fact, you don't want the air bag from the 2001 model because your SRS system uses a different voltage level to deploy the air bag.
