Hi guys, noob question,

97 3.8 y87 5 spd, how do i know if some previous owner installed a short trow shifter in this t5?

Compare your shifter to the factory unit shown in the 1996 factory service manual, pages 7B-7 and 7B-8.  If the T5 shifter is anything like the T56 shifter, the factory stick portion has a rubber bushing incorporated into the portion that connects to the stub on the transmission.  Aftermarket shifters generally do not have the bushing, and bolt directly to the stub.  Also look at your shifter for a brand name or part # different than the typical GM part # system.
