Good Morning all, I have a question for the nation. I am restoring a 79 T/A with a 403 and a TH400 that originally came from a 60's era Caddy, it has a long tail on it now. Am I able to use that in the 79 or do I need to find a short tail? I know I will need to have the shaft shortened and balanced before install.

Thanks.

The long tail will work. But you may have to make a crossmember. By '79, the only auto in a Bird was a short tail TH350.

I ran a long tail in my 1st '68 Bird. Went to a local junkyard and ask for a Pontiac TH400. The guy sold me a long tail. Hey, I'd been a 4-speed guy. Knew nothing about auto trans. Just assumed that all TH400's had the same length tail. Never really gave it much thought. Just made a crossmember, had the DS shortened, then my girfriend won a bunch of races with it, in E/SA, in '75. :smile22:
