Was your shifter firmly set in the "park" position when you initially tried to start the car and when you later tried to remove the key? Has this condition persisted over multiple attempts to start the car and/or remove the key from the ignition cylinder, or was it an isolated incident? :waitasec:

Did you just put this aftermarket knob on? Did this problem start shortly after you tightened the knob?

Back the screw out a little bit. I bet that's your problem.

I had a similar problem when I removed and replaced the stock shift knob in my car. I had to pinch the retaining staple a little bit to get it back into the slot on the knob. I must have pinched it a bit too much...for a couple weeks when I put the car in park, the transaxle lock would not engage and the key wouldn't come out of the ignition without subsequent attempts to put the car in park. After those couple weeks, the staple widened just enough to no longer interfere with the nylon rod that runs down the center of the shifter rod assembly. Essentially, if anything is interfering with the nylon rod's ability to slide completely downward when the car is in park, the transaxle will not lock and you won't be able to take the key out of the ignition. Next time this happens to you, try to lock your steering wheel. I bet it won't.
