my 99 firebird 3.8 is cutting out on me while i'm driving. it acts like its not getting fuel and sometimes it totally dies and sometimes it will just idle real rough and i have to baby it into a parking lot. when i turn it off and crank it back up it acts like it clears its self up and runs fine. sometimes it will run the rest of the day with no probs and sometimes it will run for a few mins and do the same thing again. i have already replaced the fuel pump relay and the fuel filter. besides the fuel pump its self what else could it be? my 97 camaro had the same engine and when the fuel pump went out it just went out! no sputtering or nothing.....it just stopped completely.

Don't replace anything else until you get the PCM scanned for codes. You can usually do this free of charge at any autozone.

ok so i went out to try and crank it and now it won't crank lol its acting the same exact way my camaro did now so i'm almost positive that it is indeed the fuel pump.

It won't crank, or it cranks and will not fire? The fuel pump will not cause the engine to stop turning over...

it will crank but it won't stay running. it wants to run but it acts like its out of gas. i can smell gas when i try to crank it but it just won't stay running.

ok i got it scanned for codes. it has ran fine for the past 3 days and all of a sudden today it started cutting out on me again!!
I had a bad fuel pump relay the other day when it was acting up. I put the old one back in and it started right up and ran fine until today! WTH??
here's the codes they got. if anyone knows what these mean and can explain them to me i would really really appreciate it. Maybe these codes are why the car is acting like it is?

the p0420 is for the cat converter. It means its going bad. 1870 means the transmission is slipping
My bird is a working progress. New Marshall engine-forged pistons, upgraded rockers and stronger rods/bearings. Rebuilt transmission. New LSD. I wish money grew on trees .gif)
