my girlfriends ABS INOP light decided to make an appearence tonight, no one has touched the car in a long time and it just came on randomly... she said it feels normal but since my lisence is suspended i cant drive it to find out. Iv replaced my breakpads and such so i have a little idea in the area but i wouldnt know where to begin looking for a problem except the resivoir which has plenty of fluid... any help would be great

Tommorow morning I'll have her take it out to a road where no one is and lock up from about 25mph... If the ABS works, should I just restart the comp? Other than that, if a flush/fill or replacing a fuse isn't the problem then I will need some help.

When the ABS INOP light comes on, it comes on for a reason. Some of them are fairly simple. One thing that can be done is bleed the brake system and see what happens. If the light doesn't go out, check all the connections. If there is a loose one, that is the problem. The next thing to do is pull the ABS fuse and then reinstall it. If the light goes out, it was a momentary glitch. Check the brake pads. See if one is stuck--frozen slides within the caliper can keep the brakes from applying evenly and setting off the ABS and the light.

The most expensive way to find out is take it to a dealer and have the codes read. The ABS is operated by a small computer that stores codes. The code will tell what is wrong.

Under certain conditions, ABS failure can affect the braking ability of the car. Be careful with this one.

I have been through this one a few times. what year is her car? if it is a 93-94 it is most likely the reluctor in the rear end. That is where the computer gets the information that both wheels are rotating atthe same time.

95-up cars have these at the brake caliper.

Also, if any harsh takeoffs caused one wheel to not be spinning at the same speed as the other it will set the ABS INOP

That does in fact mean you have NO ABS! you do have normal brakes though.

I have diagnosed this on several of my friends early 4th gens and it was always a bad speed sensor, or reluctor.

The dealer told my buddy it was his computer and it needed to be replaced for $900.00. I asked the dealer to pull the girdle cover on the rear end and check the reluctor. it hads been crunched up by the gears due to it falling of it's mount.

This happened on my car a while back. I got all nervous worrying about what could be causing it. One of the connecters just popped out a little. Easy fix. :(

This is kind of weird, but on F-Bodies, if the 3rd brake light is out your ABS light may come on. Check that.
