I disconnected the car battery under the hood for 5 minutes, wouldn't this be the same thing? Or does it specifically have to be the radio power connection?
I think it has to be the radio power connector..... i have a radio that acts up in my SUV, and ive tried disconnecting the battery on it to reset radio and it dont work, so i disconnect the plug from radio and then it resets and starts working again.

The non-volatile memory in a Delco 2001 Series radio (such as yours) retains radio station pre-set information and usually (but not always, oddly enough) any TheftLock code entered into the unit. All other memory settings will be reset.

Also, if I disconnected the battery, shouldn't the CD player work unless there is a malfunction in the system?

If the radio is in need of some sort of resetting, which does happen occasionally when there is a "communication error," disconnecting and re-connecting the battery will serve that purpose.
When I had an old E&C CD changer in my car I would occasionally get an "E33" code on my head unit display, which signifies a CD changer communication error. Disconnecting and re-connecting the CD changer fixed it every time.

One last thing...the "maintenance soon" light is on and everything has been taken care. How do i turn this light off? I saw othet blogs that did a reset by pressing and holding the trip reset button and others suggested pumping the gas 3 times. I tried both and neither worked.

If the condition no longer exists because you repaired the circuit(s), the PCM must typically monitor a number of "drive cycles" completed without the DTC being triggered.
