I found online that to remove the shift knob on the auto transmission that you need to pull off the push button knob and then remove the snap spring inside. Is this correct?

I tried to pull the push button off, but it would not budge and I didn't want to apply too much force for fear of breaking it. Is there a better way to do this (or what is the correct way if what i said above is wrong)?
I finally finished restoring my car on Friday!!! I am going to start restoring it again on Monday....
