This is the second time I have had a brand "NEW" EGR Valve replaced on my GTA. Ran the Autoxray scan tool on the GTA and get code 32 EGR failure. This always happens when I take the car on a long drive. I went to a car show that was about 100 miles away. When I was coming back to the check engine light goes on. I don't want to keep replacing EGR Valves. What could be causing the EGR Valve to go bad?

a code 32 is not always a bad egr, it just states there is a problem in the egr circuit. heres a link http://www.thirdgen.org/egrdiagnose

These 3rd gens are notorious for clogged EGR ports. You drive it and get it good and hot which loosens the "gunk" built up in the ports. This over loads the EGR circuit and pops the CEL. I would recommend removing the intake and cleaning the ports as best you can. If you have access to a shop that uses BG products they have an EGR flush they can perform after you have hand cleaned the ports and sealed it all back up. if you've never had it done before it's one hell of a smoke show ... think of the worst smoke job from an air fuel induction service and times it by 5!!!! LOL

i got video of when we did it to my 89' IROC-Z .... fire department got called cause it looked like the car was seriously on fire!!!! LOL LOL LOL

Steve,

Are you sure that the EGR valve went bad because it was clogged the last time you replaced it?

The original EGR valve was replaced as it was sticking. My shade tree mechanic friend took a screw driver and hammer and tapped the egr valve. This made it run better for a few seconds. So I replaced it with Autozone cheapy and I never heard the end of it for buying that. I think it is the carbon build up that Johnny mentioned in his message above. The other EGR Valve in the car now is AC Delco. No problems with it just like I had no problems with the Autozone EGR Valve. When I took the car on a long drive then I had problems with the EGR Valve(s). So I'm going with what Johnny recommanded.

Seafoam is not the same thing as an EGR flush nor is it powerfull enough to clean that crap out. The ports are going to have to hand cleaned out first. Then a complete EGR flush performed.

I'm sure price will vary depending on where you are but I charge about $100 to do it through my shop. Thats the cheap part. The labor involved in taking everything apart and hand cleaning out the EGR ports is the expensive part and a real pain in the ass! Good luck bro!!

Another thing to think about is that it may be the EGR solenoid. This is the solenoid that pulses to allow vacuum to get to the valve. When this goes bad, it can also act like an EGR malfunction.

I would check your wiring and your solenoid. If you do end up having to rip apart your TPI again, please do yourself a favor and get an AC Delco unit. They really do make a difference. Ask me how I know...
