I have a 1994 Pontiac Firebird V6 with Auto 4 Speed. The car was running like a champ and spinning tires but suddenly started running very rough with little performance. I checked all the usual air, fuel and spark components to no avail. I noted a check engine light but cannot get the PCM to emit any codes. I tried shorting the AB pins and using an OBDI code tool but i get nothing. The check engine light and ceck guage light stays on but does not flash. Nor does the check engine light flash the default codes.

Any suggestions?

You can't short the pins or use a code reader that shorts the pins on the 94. The last year you could short the pins and get the codes was in 93. What kind of reader are you trying to use?

If you have the cheapie ($30) Actron code reader, it will not work on any Firebird after 93, for the reason Bob noted. It shows on the box that is will read 94, but it won't. It's just a $30 box that shorts the same pins you can short with a penny paper clip.

Yes. I am using the Actron Cheapie. What do I need to do to read the codes ? Let me explain further what is happening: You get a check engine light, when you attempt to read the code with a paper clip or Actron (which i know you can't do now) then the check engine light just stays on. now i know that is wrong. once you turn off key the check engine light goes off then comes back on later while driving. the car has lost all power, starts fine but idles really rough, throttle to the floor gets u just enough power to get in the garage, what i have done so far is replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel lines, air filter, plugs, wires, both crank sensors, idle air control valve, knock sensor, all new fuses, new battery, and vacuum lines. checked cam sensor, egr, ignition modules and module wiring, throttle position sensor, and map sensor all checked out good. anymore suggestions?

I would get a code reader that will work and get the codes. I used to own the autoxray scanner and you can probably find one cheap on ebay. A scanner is good to have, so you will want to own one if you plan on keeping your car for a while.

As far as I know, the 94 has a conventional, 12-pin OBD-I ALDL connector. The 95 is the year with the confusing 16-pin OBD-II style connector and the OBD-I PCM. He needs an Auto Xray OBD-I scanner.

I'd definitely get the codes. You've spent a small fortune playing "parts replacement roulette"... and so far you've lost on every spin of the wheel. Paying someone $60 to scan it, or buying a used scanner for less than $100 would have been a hell of a lot cheaper.
