what the?

I puechased a 73 espirit with what I was told was the original motor that had been replaced because it was stating to smoke. I scraped the block clean just under the head on the passenger side. I can clearly read "388522" and just below that "XR". I found the "XR" was used in a variety of 4spd and automatics, but "388522" didn't show up anywhere in my research. What is this motor? Am I missing something here? I have looked everywhere I could think of to find the information. I figured someone here would be able to shine a light for me. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ok well i held this poll bcuz my history teacher gave this as an assignment and i thought who better than my FBN friends can help me narrow my options so here is the Prompt:

Write a two to three page essay on the following questions:

The American muscle car was considered Detroit's ultimate culture car, representing the "radical" decade of the 1960's. Do you agree with this historical assessment? what makes or model would best exemplify your temperament? The model you choose must be classified as a 1960's Muscle Car.

PTI : my professor is not a goon he knows his stuff he is a collector and owns 12 american classics 16 other rare cars
from my knowledge he has a SuperBird, Yenko Camaro, Challenger, Corvette all with original rebuilt engines with mods but he knows his car talk he's a Muscle Car Historian for gods sake lol

so with my new cam all in and waiting to hand a beating i found a couple high class victims in a week.

the first is a new buddy of mine that has a 02 gt mustang-procharger, full bolt on, full suspension, viper trans. so all in all a sick I am an idiot who likes to cussing car. so we race 3 times. the first is from a dig and we are side by side till 3 where i start to pull on him by 2-3 cars at the end of 4. the second we do from a 30 roll. i immediatly get a lead due to the fact that i dont have any lag in my cam haha. i get him by about 4. the last is from a dig again about the same result as the first. i will admit that his car is all in all a much bettrer built car at the moment but hes not the best driver.

the sencond rape was a 01 vette. he was revving his engine at me, at the mall. so my friend and i go talk to him and ask if he wants to run. he says what you got i was like idk. him; well with that rumble u have header( talking about the cams idle) so i say no just a bad miss fire haha. then he says only for money which i have none of (2 bad i coulda made a 100 bucks haha). he finally says ok so we go from a dig. im up by like 7 cars at the end of 3 so i just shut down. he says he spinned really bad so we line up again. we go and i miss 3 BAD like coast for 2 sec. i get it in to gear and catch right up haha. so yea thats the fun iv has so far.

well i was able to make one last run this year with my new long tube headers ond ory installed. my mods are in my signature but before the headers and ory my best pass was a 13.91 @ 98mph. now with the headers and ory...

REAL 455 HD?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, maybe should be in "part numbers" but...

Does anyone know the actual production numbers for the pontiac 455 hd 4 bolt main motors or how many may be left? I bought a block from someone that I trust wouldn't lie to me and needed some cash (but could be wrong) that he said is an original stock 455 hd. It is definetly a GM 455, definetly has a factory-appearing 4 bolt main, and still has original looking pontiac blue paint on it. According to him, its a '74 motor. It has VERY little surface rust and is in great shape. I know they are rare, I have heard there are only a few hundred left that haven't been cracked, abused, or bored.

Does anyone know what the stampings on the motor should say on these or how to identify it for sure?

I bought the motor with intentions of building it for my 73' but I'm thinking about either selling it or holding on to it and putting an LS7 in my car. Cannon Ball run

Hi all, car is up and running at last.Finished on Thursday and for the next 4 days took part in a Cannon Ball style run over a 1000miles.Car ran like clockwork, didn't miss a beat.
I certainly recommend the Hotchkiss supsension with rear anti rollbar.Handling around the twisties was awesome.I was the only 69 firebird there.Had a great time.Here are a few pics of what took part.

so last night me n Russ- (Rusnrno) went for a cruise in my formula, i wanted to go for a ride to clear my head. so i picked up Russ and we headed out, first we ran into a Mustang GT 4.6 2000 or so, younger kid driving, we know it was standard with an exhuast, needless to say we wasted himhttp://www.firebirdnation.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/driver.gif. after grabbing a few beers and a bite to eat we went out again. i notice a clean red car coming up on the side of us, turns out it was a 2005 GTO we were trying to get a red light but the first one didn't pull through so we hit the next one, i asked him LS1 or LS2, the passenger said LS2, so i figured oh great i'm gunna get smoked. we took off from the red light and i had him until 60 then once we were side by side he shut it down, he would have gotten me any farther. we pulled over and talked to him, it only had a magnaflow exhaust and he pulled a 13.5 with it. i was very impressed that i could keep up with him. now knowing that he ran a 13.5 were positive Russ should be 13.3 or fasterhttp://www.firebirdnation.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/beer.gif

75 formula first build

This is the build up of my second gen. Grew up with a love for pontiacs, and my grandpa had a 78. He died while I was in Afghan so this is my tribute to him. I am by far not a pro and doing things probably different then most people but hey, it seems to be working for me.

Car is 1975 Formula with pont. 400, th350, and a shell. The motor is being pulled and an lt1 being dropped in its place.

Just wanted to make people aware of F body warehouse (an online store)

I hope you guys have had a better experience than I have, but heres my situation so far.

Needed clutch/brake pedals for my 73 bird. They were selling them for 100 including shipping. Said 998 were in stock and items ship within 3 days.
5 days later my credit card was finally charged after sending an email asking what was going on.
a week more passes, still no pedals, email again and ask whats going on, they said they would ship out first thing next morning.
still another week, no pedals. Called them this time. They said that the company they get them through were supposed to ship them to f body warehouse in time for them to make good on their promise. They arranged for them to be drop shipped to me. I had to ask for a shipping number, which they called to get, and the shipping number didnt work (i hope to hell i missed a number or something)

I feel like im gettin taken for a ride here. They obviously didnt have them in stock. Ive waited over 2 weeks now, almost 3. By time i get these damn things I wont be able to drive it at all cause it will be to cold and or snowing.

Had they simply emailed or called me and said, hey, these are back ordered and will take 2 weeks, I woulda said, thanks for letting me know, I need these this week, so ill order elsewhere.
Instead they take my money and keep me on the string.

Just wanted everyone to know what I was going through, like I say, I hope someone has had a more pleasant experience.

My neighbor has a 93 Mustang that sounds really good. I have been wanting to race him since I got my car back on the road.
It's a 5.0 with a 5 speed. He's got headers, a big cam, gears, CAI, etc. Yesterday he bought and installed a new Trikflow intake manifold(around $450!). He came over and asked if I wanted to race now. Of course I said yes.
We drove out to an industrial area and lined up. I let the clutch out just like I was out for a Sunday drive and then mashed the pedal. I got him out of the hole and continued pulling all the way. He was waaaaay back there. I'd guess about 8 cars.
We pulled over and I asked him if his car was ok, he said, "Ya, it's fine. You just got me."
I really thought he'd give me a better race.

i was leaving a friends house saturday afternoon and pulled in to the local gas station to fill up. as i was getting back in my car i saw an orange '66 nova go by and it sounded like a beast! so i pull out of the gas station, hoping to get next to him at the light, but there was a car in the other lane at the red light so i got behind the nova. as soon as i got behind him i saw him look at me in his mirror and i knew he was going for it at the light.

so the light turns green and he punches it! i mash my pedal behind him trying to pass him. there was about a car length between us the entire time. it would have been dead even if we were side by side as i wasnt gaining on him and he wasnt pulling away from me. we went up to about 65 and slowed back down. i never got to get beside him to ask what he had but he gave me thumbs up just before i turned off the street. these are the kind of cars i like to race just so i can see them go lol.

Following my friend home on the interstate when i decided to see what he got. His car is a 2000 mustang 3.8 5 speed with an intake and exhaust. Mine is a 2001 firebird 3.8 auto with intake exhaust and a chip. Anyway i was about 4 car lengths behind him in the left lane when i decided to gun it, as soon as i did he did too. We were doin about 65. I slowly gained on him on the whole time and passed him with ease at 110. After i passed him we both left off but he was still droppin back. I must say i was impressed i gained on him that quick, bein he has a 5 speed that weighs a couple hundred pounds less then mine an i got an auto. He said he was shifting at the redline, the bird was shifting at 5k rpms. I was happy cause hes always dissin 'Birds. Then again '00 Mustangs got 190 horse and 01 Firebirds got 205 horse, thanks to the tubular exhaust manifolds, stock.

In the last few days I've been out cruising in my car quite a bit, giving me the opportunity to play.
The first was a C5 Vette with dealer plates and what looked like a mechanic driving it. Side by side at a light he wasn't paying much attention to me but when the light changed I let the clutch out just enough for a little squeal. The temptation got to him when he heard that and he stepped on it. I looked over just in time to see his jaw drop when I blew by him. It was only a short race, hit 2nd and had to let off, but it was fun.
Today, I got beside two more C5s. They were playing before I caught up to them. We hit a red light with the Vettes side by side and me behind. When the light changed we went for it and I stayed right on their tails.
Shortly after that I saw an orange Daytona Charger at an intersection as I was going through it. The next thing I knew it was right beside me. A nice looking blonde was driving and was bumping the gas to get my attention. I dropped into 2nd and she found out her nice new Charger wasn't as fast as my old Firebird.

My parents actually bought the car for me when I was around 13-14, I'm 26 now. 70K original miles, original color was green (I want to say "night-something green"?, but I forget) with a black vinyl top, but it was poorly painted some blue color when we got it and had the typical bondo filled, wavy, body work with rust around the wheel lips, Pontiac 350, 2 speed powerglide, pretty much all stock I believe. They paid $1700 off my 8th grade history teacher, it was his son's but he was in the military and the car had been sitting forever. Sadly though, I got bit by the lowrider truck bug around the time I was getting my license, so they kept the car for themselves and helped me buy a truck I wanted.

Over the years though, it's gotten; a Holley 650, Edelbrock intake, misc. chrome pieces/parts, Comp Cam (just enough for a light lope), Hooker headers, 2.5" Flowmaster dual exhaust with H-pipe, American Racing wheels (NOT a fan of them...haha), and recently some random gauges inside and a CD player mounted in that space between the console and the bottom of the dash below the original radio spot. Probably some more stuff, but I've lived an hour away from them for the past 3.5 years, and he barely drives it/interacts with it, so I forget the things he does...lol

The new color is Millenium Yellow, a C-5 Corvette color, and it's got a little metal flake the guy added. As is says in my intro thread, I've been a collision tech for the past 7-8 years, but at the time this was done, was unsure of my skills being able to be applied to an old car like this, since I only worked on late model, collision repair stuff. That, and we also didn't have an air compresser or a garage to the work in, mom wouldn't have liked all the bondo dust all over her car! haha So he had a friend do the body work and spray it, I just took the car apart, and put it back together for him. The car got new GM fenders, doors, A/M quarter skins, core support, and all 4 wheel houses. It also got some misc. chrome pieces, emblems, marker lights, etc...

I think that's about all up to this point. He's having some minor problems with it now, and keeps saying he wants to sell it and by a convertable, but I'm trying to get him to hang on to it for a little bit longer so I can have a chance to buy it back! Plus, we might have a deal on a 69 vert in the works, I'll explain in another thread. It's deffinatly not "Barett Jackson" worthy or anything like that, it's just a nice, clean driver.

This is my 95 bird. Has the 3.4 liter v6. Over 216,000 miles on her, but runs as well as she looks. And lot's better gas mileage than the 79.

Virginia City Ferrarri races

My brother is visiting from Houston. Tomorrow we're taking my car up the hill to Virginia City to check out the cars and watch some road race action. The Ferrarri Club of America puts on this timed event 2 times a year. The race is open to all cars so there is lots of variety.

On our way home this past Saturday(early evening) I got onto Highway 131 Northbound and there was a 3rd Gen. Formula 350 headed the same way. I usually take this entrance pretty hard, but had Susan with me and a car in front of me. Anyway, he saw me coming and didn't slow down to let me catch up, but once I did we were already going almost 80. I was behind him in the same lane, and he put his foot into it. I was in 4th gear and did the same, we passed a car that was in the right lane then I changed lanes and got up next to him at about 110 with way more tachometer to go(my car goes 120 in 4th @ 5,000 rpm), shifted into 5th then backed off. He was waving his hand in a circular motion as if to say; he needed more power. Wasn't really what I had hoped for when I saw him, I wanted to slow down to 40-50 and hit it, but still fun. Susan gets pretty shook up when I go WOT, but she's getting better at it.

Since I've had my car I've had only a few opportunities to do this, would like one more before summer is gone and Bird is in storage.

Should FBN add it's own ebay style auction system?

I am thinking of adding an ebay clone auction system to FBN for our members to use for a small fee (sellers only). I think it might be nice if our members were able to buy and sell in auction style format with people they know online (new members would not be allowed to use the system). I am not sure if enough people would use it, but it would integrate with the forums like the garage and timeslip systems. Here is how it would work:

1. Anyone wanting to use the system would have to have at least 10 quality posts. This would prevent scammers and spammers.

2. A small fee would also be implemented in order to also help eliminate scammers and spammers.

3. It would be an add on for IPB and would work like the Garage and Timeslip system.

4. It would feed all the auction onto the forums. In time I am hopping it will be able to replace the ebay bot.

5. We would allow people to sell Firebird Related stuff, cars, tools, and auto stuff in general. This isn't yet set in stone.

Not sure where to post this. I mentioned it in another post, but thought it was useful as its own post. I know this may be old news to some of you, but I have used this site a few times for online coupon codes and think it is great. I was buying spark plugs from an online site and thought I would see if there were any coupon codes for that site. Sure enough coupon code for 15% off iridium plugs, which I was buying. A good price search followed by a search for coupon codes makes for a few extra bucks here and there. More bucks = more mods
