Is this a U-joint issue?

On my 95 TA when I go above 80mph there is a pretty serious drivetrain vibration and a thumping type sound, things I have tried to narrow it down are:

at 90 mph I pushed the clutch in and the noise and vibration went away.

at 90 mph I downshifted into 5th gear and no change in noise or vibration.

and I tried to push through it up to 105mph and the noise and vibration got worse and louder.

no noises or vibrations under 80 mph.

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

P.S. I drive 30 miles each way to work on the highway and thats why its a big issue.

Shes beautiful once again!

So after almost a year, i finally got the parts, and the time to fix the front end of my car, here are the damaged pictures, as well as the front torn apart, and finally put back together again. You'll notice a little gap in the bumper, and the driver headlight isn't quite straight, unfortunately there was a little bit of frame damage under the bumper which made things tough to fit back together, but all in all, i think it looks great. Now to get another bird decal for the hood. Or i may put a jolly roger on it instead.

Looking for a Firebird 400 for TV

Hi guys,

I'm new to this forum so let me introduce myself. I direct the Flashbacks that are part of the show MuscleCar on Spike TV's Powerblock. If you don't watch the show, the Flashback is a 3 minute profile on a classic muscle car. We've never done a 1st generation Firebird 400, so I joined to see if there was anyone here who would like to have their car on TV. The basic criteria is that it has to look pretty much how it came originally, inside and out...not necessarily Concours perfect, but stock-appearing. The important thing is that you like to drive it. Preferably it needs a 4-speed and a colorful (i.e. not black or brown) original-style paintjob. Engine doesn't have to be numbers matching but must be era correct.

Our studio is located near Nashville, Tennessee. You would need to bring it here for a day of shooting, where you and only you will be driving the car around. The 3-minute segment will be devoted entirely to your car. I'd like to shoot this in the fall and it will air sometime in early '11, the start of our next season. Please email me at jhutcheson@rtmtv.com if you are interested or have more questions. I don't check the forum as often as my email, so email is the best way to get a hold of me.

Oh, and I know what you might be thinking...is this for real? Well, you can call the number below and check us out. It's for real. Maybe you are thinking...Nashville, that's a long way away for me. But think of it as like going to a car show, but instead of showing off your car to a couple thousand people, a couple million people will see how great it is on national TV.

Thanks,

1996 WS6 Trans Am Harley Davidson Edition

While looking through craigs list, I saw an ad for a 1996 WS6 Harley davidson edition Trans Am. I did some research and could only find website with a picture and info about the car. Apparently dealers in California took a black trans am and redid the seats and added some decals with help and permission from Harley Davidson. Apparently only about 40-55 were actually made. I went and saw the car. It had the original Harley stitching on the seats and on one side it had the outline of the decal (but no decal) of where it was in the picture. I bought the car thinking even if it wasn't real I still had normal WS6. I wanted to know if anybody could help me in trying to figure out how to confirm this is a real Harley davidson edition trans am.

Motor apart 2

Wow lots of damage and found some other issues along with parts on engine. Here is some newer pics of bent windage tray with piston chunks, marks on timing cover with bolt loose on chain,a small chunk out of wheel, bent valve in head but I think I can save head and sell them off, I could give you some more but you guys get the hint of damage, If you want to see first pics go to my other thread something let loose. Anyway with the new block I have going to start the new rebuild and when said and done with all the specs we have gathered should pump a actual 600 to 650 out of it per the build up of stroking it and alum heads and solid roller cam and such. Also still run on pump gas. Going to do a lot of things different and build and search out all the parts. Enjoy! Alan

89 Firebird has intermittent stalling

Hello all! I purchased an 89 Firebird a few months ago and have been trying to fix this problem. It's a 2.8 V6 automatic and has 190000+ miles.

I bought the car and had no problems the first week, driving it back and forth to work each day (about 25 miles each way). Then one day I was driving and it stalled on my at a traffic light. I tried to restart it a few times and then waited maybe ten minutes and it drove okay for a few miles. I've had it to 2 different dealerships and still have problems with stalling sometimes. For example, I had it to a local dealer last week and they said it didn't have any codes and they couldn't duplicate the problem; I drove it the next day when I picked it up from there and took my kids to school (2 short trips) with no issues - actually it ran really good. Then I went to drive to a town about 1/2 hr away, and it stalled on me again after about 15 miles. I turned around to go home with 2 more stalling episodes along the way. I have driven it locally all this week taking kids to and from school and to the store a few times and haven't had the problem, but I'm afraid to drive it any distance with the chance of it stalling again.

OK, here are things that I've done since I got the car and started having the problem. When I first checked the codes, I had 32,33,44 and I think another one maybe, I don't remember. The only code I've had since the first dealership looked at it has been code 32. I have replaced the PCV valve, the O2 sensor, the fuel filter, and I've had the EGR valve removed and the carbon deposits cleaned out. Oh, and usually before it stalls, I'll start to get an RPM surge and drop when I am stopped.

Sorry this was so long. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Power steering pump question on my 3.8

Hi guys, I'm new here an have a question regarding my 81 3.8. My power steering belt is flapping. So I've been trying to adjust the pump to tighten the belt. There seems to be plenty of room for adjustment based on the bolt in back of the pump. But I've loosened this bolt, as well as all the other bolts and the pump doesn't seem to want to move more than a tiny bit. Should the whole bracket move with the pump? Or just the pump itself? I'm a little confused on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I've been having an issue with the P0420 code stating that the Bank 1 catalyst efficiency is below threshold. I've changed the downstream oxygen sensor but still getting the code. The car has 31,000 miles on it, The cats and pipes are all stock with the exception of the Flowmaster Muffler. The Flowmaster was installed last year without any codes popping up. The car idles beautifully. Should I change the upstream sensor in addition to the downstream sensor? Could a sluggish upstream O2 sensor be causing this problem? I've observed the O2s on a scanner and they seem to be fine. I find it hard to believe that the converter would be going out with only 30,000 miles on the car. Is it a good idea to change both sensors rather than just one? Any ideas as what this could be?

Alternator output?

I have the 3.4L v6. I'm suspecting my alternator is going bad.

When the car starts up in the morning, it's putting out 14.2V. But after a couple hours of driving with no lights/load,
the voltage will drop around 13.65v.

I have one of those voltage readers you plug into the cigarette lighter. It's a digital readout.

It's very accurate. I double checked with my Multi-meter.

Could the alternator be going bad, or could the battery cable wires be going bad when they heat up??

Any other tests I can perform??

Outer Door Weatherstrip Replacement

I recently replaced the outer door weatherstrip mouldings on my 1989 Firebird and wanted to share information about the task .
I'm sure many 3rd Generation Birds have cracked and dried mouldings like mine were. I ordered a pair of new mouldings from www.Hawksthirdgenparts.com for $79 plus shipping which came to a total of $94 shipped to my door in about three days.
The mouldings arrived FedEx and, of course the box was damaged and the mouldings were bent, but salvageable. After straightening the mouldings I removed the drivers door upholstery, if you have never done this it's pretty easy as long as you take you time. You will need a #2 phillips screwdriver to remove the armrest, a #15 torx driver to remover the door handle trim, and a panel pry tool to remove the upholstery panel. I also always like to save the moisture barrier behind the upholstery panel, this is the treated paper that keeps the damness inside the door itself from warping the upholstery panel.
To remove the weatherstrips you can remove the door glass, but it's not necessary as I lowered the glass all the way down and loosened the two felt adjusters for the glass at the top of the inside door with a 10mm socket. Justt be sure to mark where they are before loosening them as you will want to put them back in the same position later on to prevent window rattles.
The weatherstrips are held in place with several 9/32's self tapping screws, I think there are 8, but didn't count them. I used a 9/32's open end wrench on the ones that are hard to reach behind the glass and the front most one behind the mirror sail piece.
The others were removed easily with a 9/32's socket. The front most screw is the hardest to get at, yet a lot easier if you simply cut the weatherstrip with a utility knife away from the screw area. I also used a magnet to keep from dropping the screws into the door which worked out well, no big deal if you drop any as the door is accessable to retrive them.
Before replacing the mouldings I cleaned the top of the door with some rubbing compound and put some polish on the paint, just to make sure the old dirt marks are less noticeable and make it easier to clean up later on.
Installing the new mouldings is a bit harder than removing the old ones as the acess to install all the 9/32's screws is limited.
I used a wooden wedge to hold the door glass away from the outer door skin and was able to start the screws with my fingers and some help from the 9/32's open end wrench except for the ones that have easy access, which install with the 9/32's socket.
You can prettymuch forget ever re-installing the very front screw unless you care to remove the glass and disassemble the door.
This is also a good time to lubricate anything and everything inside the door, rustproof the door bottom and make sure the drain holes in the bottom of the door are clean. Also a good time to make sure everything is tight and back into place and adjusted.
Installing the moisture barrier was easy as I used some spray adheasive to hold it in place,(masking tape works too) the upholstery goes on easy as long as the fastner buttons are all aligned before pressing them back into their respective holes.
The armrest and trim pieces go back reverse of how they were removed. The new mouldings are a big improvement over the old cracked, split and dried out ones, both in the looks department and in keeping water out of the door.
This took about an hour and 15 minutes work to complete on each door with taking a break in between for a drink and a snack!

What's this part

Hello all. I just got my first Bird and joined this forum all at the same time about a week ago. It's a hand me down '88 with the 2.8L V6. Any way, I need help trying to figure out what this part is and any suggestions will be helpful. I have included pictures to help with the process.

It starts out as two hoses that connect to the Canister Purge Valve ( Picture 1), Then makes it's way along the passenger fender, behind the A/C Accumulator ( Picture 2) and then they converge into a rubber block. From there two plastic lines take over and one goes to the front and the other to the back of the engine (Picture 3).

The problem is I have a massive leak in one of the hoses where it has rubbed on a plastic piece behind the accumulator. I don't want to just cut the hose and splice it together with a fitting. Does any one know what this particular part is? I have checked all the part store's websites and nothing even comes close.

Thank You in advance.
